Is Benefit 'They're Real' the best mascara ever??

First of all, I have to say a big thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway, and CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah @ FashionismyH2O for winning!! I loved doing a giveaway, can't wait for my next one!! =p

So, as you may remember, I spent this weekend in London. One of the presents I bought myself  -  after reading good reviews on it - was Benefit's They're Real! mascara (£15.90 in airport, £18.50 on website). I have not worn it out the house yet, but I have had a wee shot in order to do a review here.

Here's the packaging and wand:

It boasts high percentages on the box about X amount of people finding the product fantastic in every way, but I'm always a bit sceptical of this. I have used Benefit mascara before, I have a few shades of Bad Gal, but I always found the brush made my lashes a bit clumpy so I'm glad to see this type of brush instead.

It says on the box to start at the base of the lash (duh) and wiggle the wand side to side as you comb it through your lashes to thicken and coat, all pretty self explanatory. But then it says hold the wand vertically and move up and down your lashes to separate and curl. This was new to me!

So here's my lashes before any mascara:

I have quite curly lashes so I don't need to curl them and it's not usually something I look for in a mascara, but 'They're Real' promises the full package - "lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts & separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won't smudge or dry out" (from the Benefit website). My eyelashes are quite light I think and the tips are almost blonde, and I don't think I have very many lashes so I was hoping this mascara would fix all that!!

Application wasn't that easy I have to say, I got it all over my eyelid (I put on a slick of eyeliner to cover up how much mess I made lol) and I didn't really get the whole 'holding it vertical' part. But here's the results:

Before                            After
Before                           After
Before                              After

Plus Points:
  • The mascara definitely does make an impact on my eyelashes!
  • They are longer looking, as shown in the front on view
  • They are more curled, you can clearly see they have opened up from my eyeball in the side view
  • It has made my eyelashes much darker!
Negative Points:
  • I found it quite messy to apply, it seemed to go all over my eyelid!
  • I think it makes my eyelashes look quite 'spidery'
  • I don't think it thickens my lashes or gives the appearance for more lashes.

Soo.. Would I recommend it? Well, it certainly didn't work for me as well as I've seen on other people. I think you have to be really looking for length and curl to get the most out of this, and unfortunately that's not what I need in a mascara. I also haven't had to on long enough yet to check for smudging, removability etc.

If you're looking for long, curled lashes, then give this a try. As for me, I think I'll be sticking with my falsies. :(

OMG, edit!!
How could I have forgotten to post a pic of my pumpkin?? Scott and I left it to the last minute (i.e. 6pm on Halloween night) before thinking about a pumpkin, so of course they'd all sold out. So we made 'pumpkins' out of a melon and a grapefruit!

Here's the finished product. Scott went scary and I went, uhm, cat.

Hope you all had a happy Hallowe'en!!

~ Lauren ♥

  1. I have this mascara and also did a review on it recently. I like it, and I'm happy I bought it, but at 18.50 I wont be repurchasing it. It certainly makes my lashes look really long but I agree they just look spidery and not thickened at all... like really long and thin! With thick eyeliner I think it looks fine but there are mascaras that do a similar job for a fraction of the price! xx

  2. Ooh, glad it's not just not me! I was so disappointed because I was expecting so much from it, but I think because my eyelashes are already quite long it just made them look silly lol. I'll keep using it, but I agree, I won't be repurchasing! =p

  6. Do you think so? Maybe I'm just being too fussy lol! I feel like I was expecting more but looking back at the pics I can defo see that there's a big difference between before and after. I'll wear it with proper eye make up tomorrow, maybe it's just cause its the only bit of make up I have on I think it looks a bit silly! =p

  8. I have this mascara and really like it, but like you say i think it depends on what kind of lashes you have. I do agree with the fact it doesn't really make the lashes thick but it makes them spidery which i was a tad disappointed about. After using it for a while now i know that i probably won't repurchase it as it's a lot of money for something which a cheaper mascara could do and probably do better. And the cat pumpkin is so cute aha :) xxx

  9. Winda, that's very kind of you, I'm not sure if you have followed tbh, I don't see you on my followers list? =/

Kla, I'm wearing it today for the first time properly and I do actually like it as a day to day mascara, it defo lengthens and darkens my lashes. But I agree, it's not like WOW!! I'm pretty sure I could get the same affect for less! =p

  12. Hmm, I think this mascara is a bit overpriced to me. Love the pumpkins!

  13. Sandra, I don't mind spending a bit extra if it's a mascara I instantly fall in love with and can't live without, but this is sadly not one of those! So I'll try find a cheaper alternative! =p

Although my boyfriend did actually comment on my eyelashes today which, needless to say, doesn't happen often! ^_^

  16. Thanks Tiffeny! =p

Fiona and Tiffeny, if you were thinking about this mascara see if you can find other reviews and then decide. I genuinely think this is entirely reliant on your natural lashes, so what isn't that impressive on my eyelashes might look amazing on yours! But as a rule, I'd say if you're looking for thickness look elsewhere! <3

  17. Wow... There was quite a difference! I do agree that your eyelashes look a bit weird after the application. I'd still try it, but I'd probably have another mascara handy to thicken the lashes up a bit. Love your honesty! Hi! New follower from Monday Beauties Blog Hop! I hope you'll stop by and follow back! Thanks! Through the Eyes of a Tiger

  18. Thank you for checking me out! I'll just have a wee look at yours. I'll admit, the mascara has grown on me a wee bit, I'm wearing it everyday, but I still don't think I'll be repurchasing unfortunately! =p
